Everything You need to know about Children's Day in India

November 11, 2022

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s remarkable contributions to child development & education gave birth to the Children’s day celebration as a mark of his birth anniversary. So, every year, 14 November is a day dedicated to pay a tribute to our loving “Chacha Nehru”. Nehru was fondly called “Chacha Nehru” due to his affection and love for children.

“The children of today will make the India of tomorrow. The way we bring them up will determine the future of the country.”

- Jawaharlal Nehru

It is a significant date in India. This day signifies that every child, irrespective of their caste, creed, financial or political status has a right to get basic amenities including education, healthcare, and sanitation.

Until the death of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964, we celebrated Children’s Day with the rest of the world on the 20th of November - ‘The United Nations : World Children’s Day’. But after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964, a resolution was passed in the Indian Parliament to mark his birthday as Children’s Day. Children's day has been celebrated on 14th November to mark his birth anniversary, ever since.

Apart from being Nehru’s birth anniversary, the primary objective of celebrating Children’s day is to raise awareness towards children's education, their rights and to ensure that proper care is accessible to every child. Now you know why we celebrate Children's day.
